It seems I'm the latest addition to the ever-growing collection of new arrivals to this fine institution. There seems to be quite an influx of people lately, judging by the state of the journals, which leads to an interesting question. Namely, why now? Obviously with the school term there is a certain amount of sense to relocating now as opposed to some other point during the semester, but not all the introductions have come from students. It certainly bears further investigation, given the potential impact on resource and space allocation. Does anybody have any other hypotheses?

That is to say, hi, I'm Hank. I'll be staying here for a time while I'm studying and I look forward to meeting you all.

I have no hypothesis at all, I presumed a steady stream of arrivals was, for lack of a better term, normal.

Welcome to the mansion. My name is Amara Aquilla.

What are you studying?

That is a lot of SAT words.

I'm pretty sure your teachers would say that would negate the point of doing the homework in the first place Miss Smith.

Welcome to the mansion.

There does seem to be a lot of you recently. You won't be alone in learning faces

I'm Logan. Don't worry. This place always has the room to fit more.

I've heard remarks about this being a larger-than-usual intake but I'll admit my firsthand knowledge is unfortunately limited.

It's nice to meet you.

Molecular Genetics, and I'm considering a double major in another subject but I can't seem to narrow it down.

Welcome to the mansion Hank. I'm Scott Summers, I'm the oldest Alumni of the mansion and I help to keep things running around here at the moment.

I don't think you have to worry about resource or space allocation in the foreseeable future, we still only the rooms we need to, the Mansion has plenty of space still available for new people to move into. Resource wise, you'll be o unless something good was cooked for dinner, then I wouldn't recommend dawdling too long.

I didn't bring a thesaurus with me; I assumed that an educational institution of this stature would have at least one of its own. It helps that I have an excellent memory (though not eidetic).

Is it? I don't remember any of those being on the SAT, but it's been a few years since I sat it. I suppose they may have updated the vocabulary section since.

Admittedly, my experience is also somewhat limited, as I have only been here since late July. If I was to make a guess it would be that those who are not newly manifested are attracted to the security the mansion offers.

Hopefully at some point we will meet in person. Will you be joining us in the Generation X team while you are here?

That sounds interesting! I am hoping to learn more about genetics, we learned the rudiments at my previous school. What other subjects are you considering?

Of course, I wasn't implying that there was any imminent shortage of space or food - I wouldn't want to start a panic. Only that, as with all habitats, there is an implicit carrying capacity and that if annual trends in habitant influx could be tracked it might make it easier to plan accordingly.

...but I'm not trying to tell you how to do your job. I'm sure you're very good at it.

Thank you for your welcome, Mr Summers.

I'm afraid I don't know what Generation X is or what membership entails. Perhaps you could enlighten me?

I'm considering a language, or maybe literature, psychology... anything in the humanities, really. Something like political science would probably be most sensible, thought.

Oh! I assumed someone would have explained it to you. It's a group made up of most of the new arrivals, we train together in the use of our powers, amongst other things.

Something very different to what you are already studying? I have a personal preference towards classics.

If there's one thing I've learned it's that we can all always stand to do is learn a better way of doing things. I hadn't actually thought about looking at the past year to predict future expansion needs. I've been running a much more reactive strategy. Once you've got settled in why don't you stop by my office for a chat.

Welcome to the Mansion Mr McCoy, I can tell you're gonna be an interesting addition to our little community.

Oh, that sounds interesting. I'm not sure how much powers work I'll be doing while I'm here, but I'm sure it's a worthwhile endeavour for those who choose to pursue it.

I'd just like to ensure I pursue a breadth of study as well as a depth within my degree. The classics are are good suggestion; they'll certainly cover the essentials and give a good base to any further study.

Welcome to Xavier's, Hank. I hope you will have a good time here.

And I think there is one major reason for the large influx, namely that the outer world is getting unkinder and unkinder in how they deal with our... 'uniqueness'.

M-Day happened. Probably made it necessary for a lot of people to move around for one reason or another. Everybody's suspicious of everybody else these days and safe places are in short supply, I guess.

Bonjour. I am Jean-Paul. I do not know why everyone else is here but, for myself, it is because I manifested and needed to no longer be in Montreal. It is chance, I think, that I was brought here. My former guardian knew people who knew other people who lived here already.

Damnit, I was gonna say that and look actually smart for a change. :P

But yeah, I think that's a lot of it. The world's not as safe as it used to be, and it wasn't great even then. Places that train mutants and stop you from being lynched tend to be a priority.

I'm Nica, Hank. Another new-ish arrival. You aren't one of those genius people, are you? The one's who graduate high school at ten and then college before they can drive?

From: [identity profile] xp-beast.livejournal.com
Yes, I'm aware of the wider circumstances that have spurred increased mutant migration, but I was referencing a more local scale. It's possible the two are directly related though it would be hard to tell without further research. I wonder...

But yes, hello. It's nice to meet you as well, Clint.

Ah, bonjour mon ami quebecois! C'est un théorie interessant, mais le hasard n'explique pas tous les arrivées a la maison.

Apologies for that. I enjoy the chance to stretch my polyglotism whenever I can. It's easier in text; I'm sure my accent is atrocious.

I mean, generally speaking, M-Day increased tensions across the board - global event that kills millions and all that. I think it's definitely more evident on the ground. Police officers are more likely to shoot first and ask questions later. That filters out to the general populace, they get the idea it's okay to react that way.

What kind of further research are you thinking?

Date: 2015-09-17 08:48 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] xp-beast.livejournal.com
Well, one would need access to historical data, both for Xavier's (which I would think would be relatively easy to compile, if it doesn't exist in some form already) and for the larger trends of mutant habitation and migration, which would be less accessible. The unfortunate truth of the matter is that most organisations who hold information of that type are likely to be unsympathetic and their figures therefore suspect, making this a nigh-impossible task to complete with any type of scientific rigor.

C'est vrai, mon ami, il n'a pas tout expliquer. Mais cela explique beaucoup. I am not a scientist, though. How many languages do you speak?

From: [identity profile] x-hawkeye.livejournal.com
You could talk to Adrienne. She's got connections who might have more reliable data, I think, and a database that might be helpful. Or X-Factor Investigations does, at least. If you were interested in pursuing it, anyway.
